Raising Sand, from Led Zeppelin vet and bluegrass superstar, wins five Grammys on Sunday night.
By James Montgomery with MTV News staff
<P>"I'm bewildered," <a href="/music/artist/plant_robert/artist.jhtml">Robert Plant</a> said onstage as he accepted the <MTVNLINK type="news" id="1604580">Grammy Album of the Year award</MTVNLINK> with <a href="/music/artist/krauss_alison/artist.jhtml">Alison Krauss</a> on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday."</P><P>He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because <i>Raising Sand,</i> which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammy</a> album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.</p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:338316" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D338316" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p></P><P>You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a> days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history.</P><P>Really, she's the key to <i>Sand</i>'s success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music — so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, <i>Sand</i> was released.</P><P>And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain.</P><P>And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on <i>Sand.</i> His arrangements are sparse — giving the two voices ample room to breathe — yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project ... and it's certainly justified.</P><P>To date, <i>Sand</i> has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year — "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.</P><P>One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album.</P><P>"At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. ... Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" <i>New York Times</i> music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really <i>good</i> record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards." </p>

On her 'loud' personality: “I am quite loud and bolshie,” she says (British slang for unruly and clamorous). “I’m a big personality. I walk into a room, big and tall and loud.” Indeed. There is no doubt when Adele is in the building. The rule of thumb for protecting one’s vocal cords, she tells me, is: If people are more than an arm’s length away, you shouldn’t talk to them. “But I am like, Wah! Wah! Wah!,” she says, laughing. “It’s really bad.”
On giving up drinking last May: “Don’t like drinking anymore. I think I got it out of my system. D’yaknowhaImean?”
On her vocal troubles: “I’ve been singing properly every day since I was about fifteen or sixteen and I have never had any problems with my voice, ever. I’ve had a sore throat here and there, had a cold and sung through it, but that day it just went while I was onstage in Paris during a radio show. It was literally like someone had pulled a curtain over it.” She flew to London the next morning to see her doctor and was diagnosed with acute laryngitis. After a couple weeks’ rest, she continued her European tour, came to America, and then her voice went again in May. “That was a hemorrhage... a burst blood vessel on my vocal cord. That healed, I did a tour, and then it happened again at my best friend’s wedding on October 1.”
On getting support through her surgery from other artists: “John Mayer had it done at the same time as I did and he really helped me be chilled out about it. Roger Daltrey’s had loads of stuff done; Steven Tyler reached out; Elton John. Lots of artists have had problems with their voices, but you don’t know about it. And they are still singing incredibly well in their 50s and 60s.”
On her six Grammy nominations: “I burst into tears when I found out. And I would love, absolutely love, to win. This record is coming to an end, and that would be the final brick on it.” [gallery=821]

Speaking of Marcel, Marion recently told press that even before he was born, the paparazzi were relentlessly trying to get a glimpse of her baby bump.
"I was 4-1/2 months pregnant and I went to this store in Paris. I was in the dressing room and looked at my belly, and they took a picture! It was horrible. It really made me sick physically."

After enduring months of excruciating pain to stay in the competition for season 11 of "American Idol", it looks like Phillip Philips will once again have to delay an extremely important kidney surgery.
Due to massive stones in his right kidney the 21-year-old was set to go under the knife on Wednesday (May 29), but due to a sinus infection that caused him to have a high temperature doctors advised that he delay.
Phillips' girlfriend Hannah Blackwell took to her Twitter page yesterday to confirm the news writing, "Phillip’s surgery is not tomorrow, He will be fine when it is scheduled and is excited for tour. Thanks for your concern and respect.” Today (May 29) the rock star also expressed his feelings via his social media page tweeting, "Good days, bad days...you're gonna have them."
Throughout the three month competition the singer/songwriter's father Phillip Phillips Sr. told People magazine that he endured multiple surgeries explaining, "Eight operations since we started ‘American Idol’ … He’s hitting 50 percent, but he’s still up there swinging away.”
Once Phillip re-schedules the procedure the recovery will last "probably two to four weeks" according to his father and the proud dad can't wait to see him then saying, "He’s healthy, he’s good. His kidneys are good. I can’t wait for America and the whole world to see him, because he’s a big cut-up. He’s going to have some fun.”
Regardless of the recovery time, the southern singer says nothing will keep him from the "Idol" top 10 tour in July gushing, “I’m not going to be missing anything. I’ll be 100 percent by then, so I’m excited.”

Experts weigh in on whether Spears will find success with her new judging gig.
By Christina Garibaldi
<P><a href="/news/articles/1680782/britney-spears-x-factor-judge-offer.jhtml">The rumors had been swirling</a> for months, and now, according to reports, the pop princess herself, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>, will be joining the <a href="/news/articles/1684813/britney-spears-x-factor-judge.jhtml">judging panel on "The X Factor,"</a> landing a <a href="/news/articles/1684879/britney-spears-x-factor-deal-judge.jhtml">$15 million deal</a> for one season.</P><P>Yet, after 15 years in the public eye, seven studio albums and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, many are wondering: Is "The X Factor" the <a href="/news/articles/1680800/britney-spears-x-factor-judge-singing.jhtml">right career move for Spears</a>?</P><P>"I think it is a good move, actually," <a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/" target="_blank"><i>Entertainment Weekly</i></a> writer Tanner Stransky told MTV News. "I think she has so many people on her team watching what she's doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it's the right move right now."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Spears' 'X Factor' Gig Could Breathe Light Into Her Career" id="vid:768409" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>This new role certainly has many advantages. It keeps Spears in the public eye while keeping her close to her family, and it will most likely bring in the big ratings that "X Factor" and Simon Cowell are hoping for. Yet there are some experts who are a little wary of Spears taking a spot on the panel, since over the years, the pop star has been noticeably withdrawn from press, rarely giving on-camera interviews.</P><P>"I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she's been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled," Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at <a href="http://www.billboard.com/" target="_blank"><i>Billboard,</i></a> said. "And there can be uncontrollable moments on 'The X Factor,' and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome."</P><P>Stransky agreed and believes that, while Spears is judging the contestants, viewers will ultimately be judging her.</P><P>"Everyone is going to take a close look at her and pay attention to what she says," Stransky said. "She's sort of been so managed on her interviews in the past five years, it's risky."</P><P>But Spears' loyal fanbase feels that putting Spears in an environment where anything can happen is actually a good thing, and will show a whole different side of the pop star.</P><P>"That's part of the excitement of her being on this: It's unscripted," said Jordan Miller, webmaster for Spears' biggest fan site, <a href="http://www.breatheheavy.com/" target="_blank">BreatheHeavy.com</a>. "We are so used to her reading cue cards and kind of being controlled in that way, so for her to break out of that and to do something that's stepping outside her comfort zone, I think it's a great step for her, career-wise, and for her as a person. I think she's going to do really good. I think she's confident."</P><P>And confidence is key when judging a singing competition, but so is experience — which Spears has in spades. For years, fans have listened to her chart-topping music and have seen her on tour, but now they're ready to connect with the star on a new level.</P><P>"I think the overall consensus is that people are really excited to see Britney do something new and be able to connect with her a couple times a week on national television," Miller said. "It's exciting for fans to see that she's going to be able to mentor these contestants, because like it or not, Britney does have the 'X Factor,' so it's going to be great to see how she can transcend this into more singers and inspire other people."</P><P><i>Are you excited for Britney Spears to be a judge on "The X Factor"? Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have taken their love affair to Cannes. The small-screen reality siren and the filmmaker/MC made a date night of West's "Cruel Summer" premiere this week in the famed French seaside town, where Kim showed up in a beaded white and gold dress, and Kanye had a more relaxed look , wearing a white blazer with a white T-shirt and jeans.
According to People.com, before the couple entered the premiere, the wind blew through Kardashian's hair and West stopped to fix it for her. Inside the bash, which was held in a tented pyramid, the PDA didn't end. As the screening wrapped, Kim reportedly whispered something in Kanye's ear before joining in a standing ovation for the rapper. They were spotted nuzzling later at the afterparty.
The film premiere was just the latest stop on Kim and Kanye's Tour de Cannes. One night earlier, they hit up Yeezy's "Cruel Summer" fete, and on Tuesday they attended a party thrown by Diddy, E! News reported. The pair turned up at his yacht party hand-in hand, with Kardashian wearing a lacy cropped top and matching high-waisted skirt, and West in a black hoodie, black tee and jeans.
While Kim initially arrived in France solo, West met up with her later. "It's my first time to Cannes and it's amazing!" Kardashian told Usmagazne.com. "I love it here."
Are you looking forward to seeing Kanye's "Cruel Summer"? Tell us in the comments!

During band's rehearsal break for Sunday's Movie Awards, we put Foos to the test.

Making a post-release promotional appearance for her new film "Battleship", Brooklyn Decker was in Concord, North Carolina for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday afternoon (May 27).
The 25-year-old SI Swimsuit beauty took to the Charlotte Motor Speedway venue in a white dress and bright yellow day-glo shoes while taking on the role of honorary race director and special guest of Coca-Cola.
During her time at the NASCAR track, Miss Decker unsuccessfully attempted to use a jack to lift the "Battleship" car after having joined up with Go Daddy driver Danica Patrick for a pre-race press conference.
After the failed car-lifting effort, Brooklyn joked around with Danica, saying, "You're really good at turning left. She's so skilled and talented. If I can hold your gas can, I'm honored."
"It's incredible. Anytime a woman can do well in any sport it's to be admired, truly," the blonde beauty praisefully added. "To see her transcend, go from Indy to this, it's pretty incredible. She's done it seeminglessly. It's fun to watch her."
Returning the kind words, Patrick - who ended up finishing 13th in the race - said of Decker, "Speaking of transcend, I knew Brooklyn when she was a smoking-hot model. She still is a smoking-hot model underneath those clothes. Now she's a superstar. I watched her from a distance (and thought), 'How in the world does she go from the cover of Sports Illustrated to three huge movies?' It's pretty amazing. I don't feel like there's many more people that have been able to do that."

Stirring up some obvious envy from other women at the track, Nicole Scherzinger made a stunning entrance to the Monaco Grand Prix at the Circuit de Monaco to support her man on Sunday (May 27)
Joined by actor Will Smith, the former Pussycat Dolls frontwoman took race day beauty to a whole new level as she arrived at the paddock by motor launch wearing a black and white backless jumpsuit complete with a floppy sun hat and heels, while using her bright red lips and nails to add a pop of color.
Before jetting off to France to see her on-again F1 racing beau, Lewis Hamilton, Nicole took to her Twitter page while writing, “New yorkers are the best...real ppl w/amazing soul n spirit. I'll miss her..taking off to Nice now! Xo.”
The 33 year-old was just in the Big Apple to attend the premiere of her acting debut in “Men In Black III”. In the new flick - which follows Agent J back in time to his MIB's early years in the 1960s where he attempts to stop an alien from assassinating Agent K and changing history - Miss Scherzinger plays the girlfriend to Jemaine Clement’s character, Boris the Animal.
In a recent interview with VH1, Nicole explained she “auditioned for the role fair and square,” but this wasn’t the former “X Factor” judge’s first time acting, as she explained, “I actually grew up doing theater and my major in college was thea-TRE, but I have a whole new respect, because I’m used to being onstage — doing film is a lot different.”
